Debt Beyond Money
“I have come to realize that I am in perpetual debt.” She almost whispered.
I was puzzled. This was the same woman I had been working with for a while. I knew how hard she had worked to pay off her financial debt. She had even paid for a full year of my services in advance. What had I missed?
As the conversation progressed, I understood what she meant. She was behind everywhere else.
She owed time to her friends and family. She owed attention to her health. Her home was messy clean. You know it well. That kind of clean that makes everything look acceptable until you notice the grime that has accumulated for months, if not years.
Every part of her life seemed to have an outstanding balance.
The temptation would have been to make a list and start paying everything back at once. That would have recreated the same problem.
Instead, we looked at the whole picture. What genuinely required her attention? What had accumulated because she kept postponing it? What was costing her the most? What could wait? And where could one small action begin changing the balance?
We worked that way for a year. One decision at a time. One commitment at a time. With relentless honesty about what she said she wanted and what her choices were actually supporting.
At the end of that year, she did not renew our coaching agreement. There was no new goal important enough to justify continuing the work. That remains one of the outcomes I value most.
She had arrived believing that she owed something everywhere she looked. She left able to decide where her time, attention, and effort belonged without needing me to keep the books for her.
Sometimes the debt consuming us has nothing to do with money.
Perpetual debt begins when every unattended part of your life starts to feel equally overdue. The instinct is to catch up everywhere at once. That only creates another impossible demand because your time, attention, and energy are finite.
Being behind in several areas of your life does not make everything equally past due. You still have to decide what requires attention now, what can wait, and what no longer deserves the same claim on you.
Your life will always contain demands. The question is whether those demands continue making the decisions for you.
What in your life needs a decision, rather than another attempt to catch up?
